My Cleaning Business History

In 1986 I started cleaning carpets part time with a portable for a small company. While working for Ralphs Grocery Co. in California at night, I soon was able to buy my own equipment-a Century 400 with a 200 psi pump and two 2-stage vac pumps with a 12 gal. clean water tank and a 10-gal. waste tank. I cleaned after work and on the weekends for three years at $10 a room.

In 1991 I moved to Utah from Southern California where I was born and raised. I started my business in 1994 cleaning again with my portable. In 1995 I bought my first truck mount; it was from Bridge Point in Salt Lake City.

1998 was a good year when I married my sweetheart, Judy. We had a son, C.J., in 1999 who periodically works with me after school. Judy is the bookkeeper for the business and sometimes helps me with the carpet cleaning. In 2001 we were blessed with a daughter, Baylee, and in 2005, a son, Bobby. We love boating and ice fishing as a family.

Our expertise in doing big commercial jobs allows us, often, to work with other carpet cleaners that are owner/operators -this leads to sharing ideas and work with other carpet cleaners, it has been helpful over the years. In addition, we work with general contractors when doing a water loss.

Vendors that sell the equipment and chemicals provide a partners-in-service situation that enables valuable learning tools. For example, it is important to know the ingredients in the chemicals and how the chemicals work. Bridge Point, now Interlink Supply, helped me learn how to use all their chemicals and equipment. When I had a problem, I could call them and they would help over the phone or come out to my job site to help me. I have even called Pro’s Choice, and they would help me over the phone. Now, sometimes I call John at Superior Cleaning Solutions in Orem, UT. He is very helpful.

I have taken classes in carpet cleaning, tile cleaning, carpet repair and reinstallation, odor control, water damage restoration and upholstery and fiber identification from Pro’s Choice. Also, spot and stain cleaning classes from Bridge Point.

1994-2004 I worked at Smith’s Food and Drug at night and cleaned carpet during the day. Resigning from Smith’s in 2004, I started working at my own business full time.

I bought all truck mounts from Bridge Point:

1995 Pro Chem 100A
2001 White Magic Pro 1600
2005 Hydro Master 427, and started using a RX20
2006 Van 4.7 Hydro Master PTO unit
2008 Blue Line Thermal Wave II HP
2012 Pro Chem 405 Performer
2006 Silver Eagle pressure washer on a trailer

From 2001-2005 many customers had asked me to help them with their water loss problems. In 2005 I started buying different types of fans and Dehues, and I took a three-day class in water damage.

In 2001 I started stripping and waxing VCT tile floors. I learned the details and procedures from a janitorial crew. However, businesses are leaning towards polished cement, now. There is still some VCT tile out there, but not much.

In 2006 I bought my Silver Eagle pressure washer. It is a heated unit with 4,000 PSI at 6 GPM. A 24-inch Whirly Bird, 500 gallon water tank, 50 gallon propane tank, 30 gallon pre-spray tank with 200 psi pump.

Over the years I continue to buy equipment. I think I own one of everything that Interlink Supply sells and have tried all of their chemicals. Every spot in your carpet needs a different chemical to get it out. There is not one chemical to get out all the spots.

I do more water damage in the winter and more carpet cleaning in the summer.

I would  like to do more pressure washing and flood work.

When I get called to clean, you get me, not just some person or employee just learning. I have been cleaning for the same people for the last 15 years- they know me and my family and they trust me. When I get to a job, they often say, “Hi Jeff, the check is on the counter, lock it up when you are done, say Hi to Judy.”

Part of our expertise is teaming up with other owner-operator carpet cleaners to do carpet cleaning jobs or water damage jobs. This way I can compete with the big water damage and carpet cleaning companies. If needed I can show up with 6 trucks or more. I have made a lot of friends in the business over the years.

Carpet Cleaning and water restoration has been a rewarding journey for me and my family.

Right now, in my box truck, I am running a Pro Chem 405 Performer and in my van, I am running a Blue Line Thermal Wave HP II.

This is demonstrating the power of a truck mounted carpet cleaning machine.
Vacuuming regularly will help the health of your carpet and leave the carpet cleaning up to us.
I always pre treat the carpet and work on any spots that are needed.
Sometimes after pre treating the carpet some agitation helps loosen up the soil in your carpet.
We will make your carpet healthy and clean once again.

If you live in Utah County, give us a call, we will make sure that your carpet is being cleaned right.
If you have dog(s) or cat(s) in your home and there is a lot of animal hair in the carpet, the hair weaves in and out of the carpet fibers. Using a pile lifter is a good way to get the animal hair out of the carpet. We would do this before carpet cleaning.
According to IICRC standards, pre vacuuming the carpet before you start carpet cleaning is important because you need to get all the dry soil out of the carpet before get the carpet wet so you don't make mud.

It is important to pre spray the carpet to suspend the dirt and break apart the oily substance into a liquid form, so when you wash the carpet, it will make it easier to rinse away.

After you have pre sprayed the traffic areas in your home brushing in the pre spray with a carpet cleaning brush will add some agitation to break apart the soil from the carpet fibers.

If you live in Utah County, we will do a great job in getting your carpets cleaned. We have all the knowledge and equipment to make sure your carpet is thoroughly clean.

It is important to rake the carpet after it has been cleaned so all the fibers will stand upright, that way when I turn on my carpet drying fans the carpet will dry much faster.
According to IICRC standards you always rake the carpet after it has been carpet cleaned.

Name: Michelle Eliason
How did you hear about us?: Google.
Question / Message: We were so impressed with Alpine Professional Carpet Care.  The customer service was prompt and efficient.  We had our call answered personally, by the owner , Jeff Tobian, without going through a voice message machine or receptionist.  Jeff was very knowledgeable and had many years of experience, which carried through in the work that was done with the carpets in the home.  He was the one who met us and took care of the cleaning. It was done in a very professional manner. We would highly recommend him to all of our associates and friends.

If you live in Utah County, give a call, we will do a great job for you. On the top of this page, is an email from a customer that we cleaned for today.
When my son comes with me, he is a lot of help. The first thing he does, is to bring in the corner guards and towels to protect your home, when setting up to clean your carpets. He rakes the room after I am done cleaning it. He helps me keep hoses away from the walls. He also checks for spots in the carpet that I might have missed. He helps  move the furniture, pick up items off the floor, put plastic tabs or styrofoam blocks under the furniture, and he knows where everything in the truck is, if I need something.
Putting an airmover in a room after it has been cleaned is always a good idea.
My son is a lot of help when packing up. Here he is rolling up all the hoses.

Speaking of my son, this is what he gave me for Father's Day. Thanks, C.J.! You are great!

It works great for cleaning in high places.
This is my son, C.J., he likes to help out.

Here, I am blowing the gum off the cement and cleaning the
skid marks from the fork lift.

This is my 24 inch spinner tool. It helps a lot to have a heated unit.

Can you see the difference?

They had just painted this room and got paint all over the carpet.
I was getting it out with Pro Solve gel.

We were putting sliders underneath the furniture, so we can move the furniture easily, so it doesn't leave drag marks on the carpet.
It always helps to set up a fan after cleaning a room.

Last night we were carpet cleaning at Ashford Memory Care, in Highland , Utah.

This is a beautiful place to take your loved ones
I clean this carpet regularly so the carpet is always clean and neat.
I left some fans so the carpet would be dry when everyone woke up in the morning.

It is important to have a maintenance program. For example you need to vacuum everyday, you need to change out the welcome mats every week and run a pile lifter on the entry ways and traffic areas. Every 3 months bonnet clean the traffic areas. Every 6 months steam clean the traffic areas and entry ways. Every year steam clean all the carpets.
After steam cleaning a commercial building, it helps to bonnet clean afterwards with encapuclean with maxim, the heavily used traffic areas and entry ways and spray ARA on the entry ways. This will help because the soil won't stick to the carpet and it will get vacuumed up by the janitorial crew. The carpet will look better for a longer period of time.

This is bonnet cleaning after steam cleaning with encapuclean.

This is a pile lifter.

Carpet cleaning in Alpine Utah

When carpet cleaning a spot in your carpet, you need to look and see if the bottom of the fibers and the top of the backing is clean, if not, as it dries the spot will wick back up to the top of the fibers. On this carpet you can see that the top of the fibers are a different shade than at the bottom but the backing and the base of the fibers are clean.

Before we started this whole room was full of exercise equipment and other misc. items.
This is my son, scraping off the padding that was glued onto the cement.

We had to cut about 3 inches from the bottom of half the dry wall. The walls were wet 12 inches high.
We set up dry equipment to begin the drying process.
Now I am on my way to the next job.
